From First Conversation to Final Installation: How KN Interiors Design Process Works

Planning a remodel or redesign involves thousands of tiny decisions and the alignment of many moving parts. Homeowners often start with an idea of what they want, a general sense of what they hope to invest, and a collection of inspiration images. These are all important pieces of information, yet they are rarely enough to determine the actual scope of work, the design direction, or the true cost of the project. Our team has refined a three-phase process that provides an overall structure, eliminates guesswork, and creates a calm, organized path from the first conversation through installation.
Our approach includes Exploratory Design, Detailed Design, and Purchasing & Execution. Each phase has a specific purpose, and each builds on the last. This process ensures that your project progresses in a thoughtful, predictable way without surprises that can derail the timeline or the budget.
Phase One: Exploratory Design
Why Exploratory Design Exists
Exploratory Design is the first step in every project at KN Interiors. It exists to define the direction, the functional requirements, and the budget before any detailed design work begins. Many homeowners believe they already know how much they want to spend or how they want the space to look. These starting points are helpful, yet they often do not reflect the true cost of materials, labor, or the structural considerations of your home.
Exploratory Design resolves this early gap between expectation and reality. It prevents designing in the dark, which is a common cause of delays, rework, and financial surprises. It also ensures that you never commit to Detailed Design fees before the scope, direction, and investment level of the project are fully understood.
Your Exploratory Design fee is based on the number of spaces included, the complexity of the project, and whether the work involves construction, furnishings, or a combination of both. Every project begins with a different set of needs, and the fee reflects the time and expertise required to prepare the layouts, pricing research, and recommendations that guide the rest of your project.

What You Receive in the Exploratory Design Phase
The work completed in this phase is thorough, structured, and tailored to the needs and wants you’ve expressed in our initial meetings. You can expect the following:
The ideal layout, or layout options, when there are multiple strong possibilities. When your initial idea differs from what the space suggests, we will show you your way and our way. Even when the layout does not require adjustments, this phase still includes all of the elements below.
Visual direction, using inspiration images you provide along with curated examples that reflect your preferences, stylistic goals, and functional needs as we understand them.
A thoroughly researched preliminary budget with line-by-line ranges for furnishings, materials, finishes, fixtures, and contractor labor when relevant.
An initial scope definition of what the project will include and what it will not.
Mood boards or sketches as needed to illustrate proportion, finishes, or overall atmosphere.
Clarification of priorities so that your investment is directed toward what will matter most in your completed home.
Timeline expectations for the Detailed Design phase, which generally range from three to eight weeks depending on the complexity of the project.
What Exploratory Design Is Not
Exploratory Design is not the final design. It is an essential first step that establishes direction, scope, and cost so that the next phase can proceed smoothly. This structure eliminates misunderstandings, greatly reducing the need for revisions, and ensures that everyone begins Detailed Design with the same priorities and expectations.
By the end of this phase, we have a clear understanding of what your project entails, we know your functional needs are met, and we’ve identified the investment range required to achieve your goals. You are now able to make informed financial decisions, and our team can proceed with accuracy.

Phase Two: Detailed Design
What Happens in Detailed Design
Detailed Design is where we finalize every detail and create the complete design for your home. It includes the full scope of design work necessary to transform our Exploratory concept into a fully-composed plan:
Collaboration with contractors, architects, and vendors
Detailed space planning / construction planning
Detailed layouts and 3-dimensional renderings
Custom cabinetry design or cabinetry selections
Electrical planning and fixture selections
Plumbing planning and fixture selections
Tile selections (kitchens & baths)
Flooring
Architectural selections (trim, doors, hardware, etc.)
Integration of existing pieces
Furniture, fabric, and finish selections
Paint colors / wallpaper
Window treatment design
Artwork and key accessories
General organization
Creation of necessary designs or renderings
Final budget preparation
Your Detailed Design fee is determined by the scope of the project and the decisions made during your Exploratory Design phase. Once we understand what your project includes and the level of detail required for each space, we can accurately determine the time, coordination, and specialized work needed to complete the elements above.
This ensures the design we go on to create for your home is the one you will love living in for decades. The fee is presented clearly as a line item in your Exploratory presentation, just like every other aspect of the budget, and reflects the depth and complexity of work required for your project.

With all of the necessary selections and drawings prepared, we can now present you with the completed vision through renderings, samples, and the specific selections for every item, fixture, and material required.
The scope of work will also have been revised based on the decisions made in the Exploratory phase, and the budget refined and finalized accordingly. If there are still a few details that need adjusting, not to worry, one round of revisions is also included to ensure that every element is perfect. Once your detailed design is approved, your project is ready to be lined up for Purchasing & Execution.
Why KN Interiors' Design Process Leads to Better Results (and Faster Construction)
Separating the design work into two stages creates a more efficient and predictable project. It eliminates rework, minimizes surprises, and reduces the likelihood of changes to the budget.
By the time Exploratory Design is finished, everyone understands the aesthetic direction, the functional requirements, and the expected investment. This allows you to move into Detailed Design with a sense of calm, knowing we are aligned on the goals and budget for your home, and you can breathe easy as we work our magic.
A deliberate front-end process creates a smoother, faster path through construction. Your contractor has complete and accurate information before the project begins, allowing them to dial in your timeline, and all but eliminating the dreaded scope creep. It is a system designed to remove the majority of stress and uncertainty that so often accompany remodels.
Phase Three: Purchasing & Execution
Purchasing & Execution is where we order everything, coordinate every detail, and bring your design to life.
This includes the following steps:
Drawing up the scope of work
Creating both the digital and printed field copy of the contractor’s project guide
Ongoing consultations with vendors / contractors / architect
Construction drawing and elevations
Order preparation, placement, and tracking
Resolving any damages and returns
Facilitating communication and decision making throughout the project
Overseeing construction, measures and installations
Orchestrating appointments, vendor meetings, installers etc.
Overseeing / coordinating deliveries
All of this is handled with the same level of care as the design work itself. It keeps your project moving forward without requiring you to take on a second full-time job managing vendors, troubleshooting orders, or navigating the complexities of construction.

A Final Overview
Exploratory Design defines what you want, how the space will function, what the project will include, and approximately how much it will cost.
Detailed Design completes the vision by selecting and refining every fixture, finish, and element, and by finalizing the scope of work and investment.
Purchasing & Execution brings the design to life by managing orders and deliveries, coordinating with your contractor, and overseeing the project to final completion.
In short, our process has been refined to create a seamless, organized, and elevated experience for the transformation of your home.
